toei

Asiascape is honoured to host a virtual exhibition of images produced by the world famous TOEI Animation production company, whose stable of anime includes innumerable classics of the media since its establishment in 1948. TOEI is well known for a range of anime genres, but in this little exhibition we focus on its contribution to Science Fiction, and in particular on the ways in which its artists, story-tellers and directors have envisioned a space-faring future for Japan and the rest of the world. Hence, this exhibition includes images from the seminal works: Cyborg 009, Galaxy Express 999, Space Pirate Captain Harlock, and finally the recent phenomenon, Digimon.

We gratefully acknowledge the permission of TOEI to display these images, and the copyrights of their respective creators. These images were first exhibited at the Peace Palace in The Hague (13/02/09), as part of a conference on the Past and Future of Japan's relationship with Europe, on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of Dutch-Japanese trade relations in 2009.
