The Future via Anime

Asiascape is grateful for the support of TOEI animation for donating these images of an imagineered future. An exhibition of these images was shown at the Peace Palace in The Hague on 13th February 2009, as part of a conference on the past, present and future of EU-Japan relations.

In year 2XXX, people on earth artificially prolong their lives using robot bodies. Tetsuro and his mother live together and are too poor to afford the luxury of mechanical bodies. One night, Tetsuro's mother is killed by a ruthless man-hunting mechanical man. Tetsuro decides to board the spatial train Galaxy Express 999, in search for a mysterious planet where everyone can receive mechanical bodies for free.
